🇪🇹 Eskinder Nega and Zemene Kassie unify rival Fano factions in Ethiopia’s Amhara region

Eskinder Nega and Zemene Kassie, two leading figures in Ethiopia’s Fano rebellion, failed to agree on a unified command when they met in Gojjam in mid-2023 after Eskinder travelled from Addis Ababa with a proposal to bring the expanding insurgency under one structure. The two men instead formed rival organisations before later joining forces earlier in 2026, according to a report published on 18 September 2026.

Fano emerged as an armed movement in the Amhara region during the conflict period that followed the war in northern Ethiopia. The alliance between Eskinder and Zemene comes after a prolonged leadership rivalry at the centre of the rebellion.
