🇿🇲 Zambia targets copper expansion amid record prices and new mining investment

Zambia is seeking to raise copper output to 3m tonnes by 2031 as President Hakainde Hichilema begins his second term, despite industry estimates suggesting the target is unlikely to be met. Copper traded at more than $15,000 a tonne in London in mid-September, while S&P Global projects global demand will rise from 28m tonnes in 2025 to 42m tonnes by 2040. Zambia produced about 800,000 tonnes in 2021 and just under 900,000 tonnes last year, with mining accounting for 15% of national income and 65% of exports. Recent investments include $1.25bn by First Quantum Minerals at Kansanshi, $2bn by Barrick Gold at Lumwana, and KoBold Metals breaking ground at Mingomba in April.

PwC estimates output could reach about 1.8m tonnes if known and committed projects operate at full capacity, while the World Bank says production may reach 1.5m tonnes by 2031 and 3m tonnes only after another decade if major new discoveries are made. Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said the sector had recovered after years of disruption, while the Zambia Chamber of Mines linked renewed investor interest to royalty and tax reforms introduced during Hichilema’s first term.
