🇳🇬 Nigerian opposition enters 2027 race split against Tinubu

Nigeria’s opposition has gone into the 2027 presidential race divided after a coalition of the main challengers fractured over leadership. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, 80, secured the African Democratic Congress ticket after winning 29.07% in the 2023 election, while Peter Obi, who won 25.4%, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who won 6.23%, moved to the new National Democratic Congress as presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively. President Bola Tinubu, who won 36.6% in 2023, is running with Vice President Kashim Shettima. On 12 September, the Independent National Electoral Commission published a list of 18 presidential candidates for the 16 January vote.

The campaign has focused heavily on the cost-of-living crisis following Tinubu’s fuel subsidy removal and naira floatation, measures that pushed inflation in 2024 to its highest level in 28 years before easing. Abubakar has pledged to restore fuel subsidies, while the presidency says the reforms were necessary and need more time to deliver results.
