While speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump claimed that he ordered the US to attack Iran in order to prevent what he described as a potentially catastrophic global threat, claiming that Israel would otherwise have been "wiped out."

"Israel would have been wiped out by now. There would be no Israel, no Middle East, and then the rockets and bombs would start coming toward us and Europe. And I stopped it," he said.
