French President Macron has burdened the economy with massive debt, and his successor will have to find 126 billion euros to stabilize the national debt, Bloomberg reports, citing a report for the Ministry of Finance.
The authors of the study warn that without reforms, the budget deficit will rise to 7% of GDP by 2030, and interest payments will increase by 46 billion euros. The authors of the report, including former European Central Bank employee Natasha Valla, assert that “significant debt is a slow poison for the economy” .
Economists are calling for spending cuts to begin as early as the 2027 presidential election, without waiting for the new leader’s inauguration.
Incumbent President Macron is barred by law from running for re-election.
