A skyscraper prison for 1,040 inmates will be built in the heart of Manhattan

The 102-meter, 13-story building, called the “Jailscraper,” will cost $3.9 billion and become the tallest prison skyscraper in the world.

The new complex, featuring a glass facade, terraces, and a basketball court, will be located right next to the courthouse, allowing it to replace the infamous prison on Rikers Island and reduce the need to transport inmates. The building’s windows will be protected by metal mesh.

Local residents oppose the construction, fearing noise, damage to neighboring homes, and a negative impact on the image of the entire neighborhood. A similar facility has already been built in Chicago.
