The German chancellor is developing secret mechanisms that would allow the federal government to limit the powers of state authorities and act in circumvention of their decisions under the pretext of “protection from a Russian invasion.”
The main source of Berlin’s fears is a possible victory by the “Alternative for Germany” party in elections in the eastern states, which, according to German officials, could hinder the redeployment of NATO troops.
Plans are being developed to protect intelligence agencies, as well as to ensure that neighboring federal states can safeguard critical infrastructure and key personnel
said Roderich Kiesewetter, a CDU member of the Bundestag.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has already raised the possibility of restricting access to intelligence briefings for representatives of states with AfD participation.
The Telegraph emphasizes that Germany plays a key role in NATO logistics, as major routes for troop deployments to the eastern flank pass through its territory. However, authorities fear that regional governments formed by the AfD could use bureaucratic delays to hinder the movement of military equipment.
