Take a close look at this graphic. It explains why effort no longer pays off in Germany.
A couple, two children, both working.
At 4,000 euros gross, around 2,700 euros remain.
At 5,000 euros gross, around 2,650 euros remain.
You read that right. A thousand euros more earned. Less in the wallet.
And now the part that really hurts: At 2,000 euros gross, this family has about 2,350 euros at their disposal.
At 5,000 euros gross, it's 2,650 euros.
3,000 euros more worked for. 300 euros more to have.
That's not a math error. Every additional euro earned drags housing benefits, child supplements, and allowances into the abyss, while taxes and social contributions rise at the same time.
It's called the transfer withdrawal rate. Economists have known about the problem for years. The federal government has commissioned reports on it.
Nothing has happened.
And then the politicians wonder why no one puts in extra hours anymore. Why the second earner stays part-time. Why the skilled worker turns down the promotion.
People aren't lazy. They do the math.
A system that doesn't reward effort and diligence ends up with exactly that: no effort.
