Scientists in Vienna and Beijing have independently created the world’s first operating nuclear clocks. Instead of tracking electrons like atomic clocks, they use lasers to measure energy changes inside thorium-229 nuclei.
The prototypes could eventually improve GPS, global communications and precision measurements — while also helping scientists search for dark matter.
