New touch-gesture code has appeared in Apple’s macOS 27.2 beta, adding to reports of an OLED touchscreen MacBook. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects an October or November launch.

The rumored redesign could bring a thinner, lighter laptop with a Dynamic Island replacing the notch. Apple hasn’t confirmed it, and the code could instead improve touch controls through an iPad using Sidecar.

TECH NEWS | A 501-BILLION-PARAMETER AI MODEL JUST ENTERED THE RACE

Nvidia-backed Reflection AI has unveiled Beam, a new open-weight model built for coding, complex reasoning and autonomous AI agents.

Beam has 501 billion parameters but activates only 23 billion per task, making it faster and cheaper to run. Its weights and developer tools are scheduled for release later this month.

Could Beam become the Western answer to DeepSeek?

TECH NEWS | THE US NAVY IS USING XBOX CONTROLLERS TO FIRE LASERS

The US Navy is using Xbox-style controllers to operate LOCUST anti-drone laser systems. The familiar controls allow sailors to target threats after less than an hour of training.

LOCUST can track and destroy drones using a high-energy beam. Each engagement costs only a few dollars, while conventional interceptor missiles can cost thousands or even millions.

TECH NEWS | HUAWEI AND QUALCOMM JUST MADE A RARE 5G DEAL

Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a multi-year patent agreement covering 5G, AI, computing and networking. It is their first licensing deal to include 5G technology.

Qualcomm will also acquire certain Huawei US patents. The agreement shows that even amid US–China tensions, major tech companies still depend on each other’s inventions.

TECH NEWS | THIS OPEN-SOURCE ROBOT WAS BUILT TO TAKE A KICK

RoboParty has unveiled RP1, a bipedal humanoid designed as an open development platform. At IROS 2026, visitors pushed and kicked the robot while it recovered its balance.

According to RoboParty, RP1 delivers up to 160 N·m of peak joint torque. The company plans to release more hardware designs, software, simulations and training tools later this quarter.

TECH NEWS | NASA JUST LAUNCHED A ROBOT TO INSPECT DEAD SATELLITES

NASA has launched Otter 24C, a 335-kilogram autonomous spacecraft built by Starfish Space. Starting in 2027, it will approach and inspect up to four inactive satellites in low Earth orbit.

The spacecraft uses computer vision, electric propulsion and autonomous guidance to examine their condition. This could lead to robots that repair, relocate or safely remove dead satellites.

Tavus has unveiled Griffin, a real-time video AI that watches, listens and responds simultaneously. In the company’s test, 26 of 54 participants believed their one-minute call partner was a real person.

Griffin generates speech, facial expressions and body movements live, even reacting while someone is still talking. Tavus is restricting access until safeguards against deceptive use are ready.

TECH NEWS | A 5.8 GWH BATTERY MADE OF CARBON IS COMING

Antora Energy and Pratt Energy are building a massive thermal battery in Kansas. Instead of lithium, it stores electricity as heat inside insulated blocks of solid carbon.

Starting in 2027, the system will deliver energy around the clock to a biorefinery. Once completed, it could become one of the world’s largest battery storage projects.

TDK has demonstrated the world’s first smart-glasses display using a 150-nanometer meta-optic mirror to project images directly onto the retina.

The technology could make AR glasses look like ordinary eyewear while keeping displayed content hidden from nearby people. TDK is now developing a full-color version for future mass production.

Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new four-finger hand for Atlas. It has 13 degrees of freedom and pressure sensors across the fingertips and palm.

The upgrade lets Atlas adjust slipping objects and operate tools such as drills, grinders and welding torches. Its simplified design is built for reliable mass production.

TECH NEWS | LASER LIGHT COULD BREAK AI’S MEMORY BOTTLENECK

Volantis has raised $88 million to develop photonic links that move data between processors and memory using laser light instead of electrical wires.

The startup says its design could connect up to 220 memory chips to one GPU, compared with about eight today. Its first commercial chip is planned for 2027.

Fujitsu built a Social Digital Twin that simulates how crowds would evacuate if Godzilla reached Kawasaki from Tokyo Bay in about 60 minutes.

The unusual scenario lets planners test disaster-response decisions inside a virtual city before a real emergency. Fujitsu will demonstrate it at CEATEC 2026 from October 13–16.
