🚨🇮🇳 India’s ‘Cockroach’ Protest Leaders Released as Youth Movement Vows to Continue

Leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have been released after nearly 24 hours in detention following mass protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The movement is protesting alleged irregularities in voter lists and concerns over the Election Commission’s independence. Thousands of demonstrators were reportedly detained as authorities imposed restrictions across the capital.

India’s Supreme Court has directed authorities to prevent illegal detentions of peaceful demonstrators and said peaceful assemblies must be allowed in accordance with the law. CJP leaders have called for renewed peaceful protests, declaring that their campaign is far from over.

The Indian government has rejected UN human rights concerns over the detentions, calling them unwarranted interference in India’s internal affairs.
