🇵🇰 Pakistan Declares Emergency in Imran Khan’s Party-Ruled Province

Pakistan has declared a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the northwestern province governed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

According to Al Jazeera, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the federal cabinet’s recommendation after the government accused the provincial administration of disengaging from efforts to combat terrorism.

The emergency was invoked under constitutional provisions related to security and could allow the federal government to assume some or all provincial functions. PTI lawmaker Junaid Akbar also claimed that provincial Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and the party’s provincial president had been arrested.

The move comes as PTI prepares to march on Islamabad to demand Khan’s release. The party has warned that the decision could fuel further instability and bloodshed.
