❗️Turkiye stocks enter bear market after worst month since 2008
Turkiye's main share index entered bear-market territory in September and recorded its worst monthly performance since 2008, as a selloff fueled by cash-strapped investment funds spread across the wider market.
The index fell 2.79% on Wednesday, closing more than 20% below its record close on 11 May and officially entering a bear market. It ended September with a 16.65% monthly decline.
The selloff intensified on 14 September amid concerns about funds with heavy exposure to thinly traded stocks.
The index dropped more than 8% in the week ending 18 September, marking its steepest weekly decline since March 2025, when the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu sparked a sharp market selloff.
On 17 September, the Capital Markets Board (SPK) ordered the liquidation of 131 funds managing more than $20 billion and serving 455,758 retail investors.
