Stella Juva: The ambulance that runs on the sun

Engineering students at the Eindhoven University of Technology have built Stella Juva, a fully functional medical ambulance that generates its own power using solar panels. You might think this is just another electric vehicle, but it is actually a mobile hospital designed to bring critical care to remote, underserved regions where healthcare access is limited. 🚀

The vehicle features integrated panels on the roof and extendable wings for extra charging. This setup allows for a range of up to 715 kilometers and speeds reaching 120 km/h. It packs a 50 kWh battery to keep running even after sunset. During field tests this August in Narok, Kenya, the team worked with Amref Health Africa to prove the concept in real-world conditions.

The solar energy isn't just for driving. It powers essential medical tools:
▪️ Portable X-ray machines
▪️ Ultrasound scanners
▪️ Automatic external defibrillators
▪️ Vaccine refrigeration systems

Unlike standard ambulances that rely on fuel-hungry internal combustion engines or stationary grid power, Stella Juva produces more energy than its medical equipment consumes. It effectively turns the vehicle into an energy-positive clinic rather than just a shuttle.

Sustainable technology is finally hitting the road where it is needed most.

Tesla FSD v14.3.9 adds emergency steering

Tesla has just released version 14.3.9 of its FSD software, which now keeps a close watch on the road even when you are driving manually. 🚗

This update changes how the car’s safety systems work. If the car detects a crash is about to happen, it no longer just waits for you to react. Instead, the software can actively step in to help you avoid the accident. The system now reacts by:

▪️ Steering the vehicle to avoid an obstacle
▪️ Applying the brakes automatically
▪️ Accelerating to move out of harm's way

This is a significant shift. Previously, the software was primarily focused on automating the driving experience. Now, it serves as a persistent safety guard that watches your back while you are behind the wheel. In a separate move to expand its footprint, Tesla has also received approval to operate FSD in Slovenia. 🤖

Most standard collision avoidance systems found in other vehicles are relatively simple; they usually just slam the brakes when they detect an immediate obstacle in front of them. Tesla's new feature is different because it uses the more advanced, "thinking" computer vision model from FSD to make complex maneuvers, like steering around a hazard rather than just forcing a hard stop. 🛑

The car is now watching your back.

Rivian Launches Autonomy+ for R1S and R1T

Rivian has rolled out its Autonomy+ system, allowing its electric vehicles to navigate between mapped points across the U.S. and Canada without constant human input. This new capability is arriving for the company's newest R1S and R1T models, marking a major step for the brand in the automated transport market.

This point-to-point system uses sensors to manage steering, acceleration, and braking while obeying traffic lights and stop signs.
The technology allows owners to input an address, sit back, and let the vehicle drive itself on mapped routes, changing the driver’s role to that of a supervisor.
Rivian will also bring this system to its upcoming R2 SUV by the end of this year via an over-the-air update, which is simply a wireless software patch that adds new features to the car.

When considering the price, Rivian will charge $49.99 per month or a one-time fee of $2,500. This places the system in direct competition with other automakers:
🔹 Tesla currently charges $99 per month for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system.
🔹 Mercedes has set a price of $3,950 for a three-year subscription to its MB.Drive Assist Pro, which still requires the driver to keep at least one hand on the steering wheel.

It is a practical move toward letting cars handle the more tedious parts of a daily commute.

The race for hands-free driving is clearly heating up.

Elroy Air’s Chaparral completes first autonomous flight

Elroy Air just successfully finished its first fully autonomous, uncrewed flight of the Chaparral drone in California. 🚀 This milestone occurred under the watch of the FAA through their eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

The Chaparral is designed to transport heavy cargo without needing a human pilot on board. It takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter, meaning it does not need a runway, but it flies like an airplane for better efficiency.

Moving freight autonomously could eventually make deliveries to remote or hard-to-reach locations much faster and cheaper.

This specific focus on logistics sets the company apart from competitors like Joby Aviation or Archer Aviation. 📦 While those companies are mostly building air taxis to carry passengers, Elroy Air is strictly targeting the heavy-lift delivery market.

Autonomous cargo is finally taking off.

PHEVs Emit 6 Times More Pollution Than Officially Stated

New 2024 data from the European Union reveals that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) produce six times more carbon dioxide than official testing standards indicate. This is not just a minor calculation error; it means your typical hybrid car is far less eco-friendly than the marketing materials claim. ⚠️

The problem is getting worse as these vehicles age. Data shows that the gap between real-world emissions and controlled lab results is widening over time. The automotive industry lobby is currently working to block new regulations that would force them to report these higher, more accurate pollution figures.

The regulatory framework designed to track vehicle emissions is failing to account for how these cars perform in daily traffic, allowing them to remain on the road under false environmental pretenses.

Official government metrics, such as the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, rely on controlled lab conditions that ignore real-world driving variables. These numbers are a stark contrast to the actual emissions recorded during daily commutes, which were marketed to buyers as a clean, low-pollution bridge to full electrification. Now, the real environmental impact of these cars is proving to be much higher than the figures touted at the time of purchase.

It is clear that the environmental promise of these hybrids does not match the reality of our daily commute.

The green label is coming off.

California Gets a New Virtual Power Plant from Google and Tesla 🚀

In California, Google, Tesla, Sunrun, and Pacific Gas and Electric are teaming up to launch a shared energy network.

Instead of building expensive new power stations, they are linking thousands of home batteries and solar panels together. When the local grid runs low on power, this network automatically shares stored electricity to keep homes running smoothly.

This setup pools home batteries and solar arrays so the whole neighborhood can share extra electricity when it is needed most.

You do not need to build anything new to help out. Your existing home solar setup or garage battery can quietly pitch in behind the scenes.

Your garage battery is becoming part of the power grid.

Geely is developing a 1,000-volt charging system

Geely is currently working on a new car platform that runs on 1,000 volts to drastically cut down your wait time at the charging station. This high-voltage setup allows for much faster energy transfer, meaning you can spend less time plugged in and more time on the road.

The company has already put this theory to the test in their labs. They successfully used charging stations with a peak output of 1,500 kW in their latest trials.

To put that speed in perspective, consider that today’s fastest "ultra-fast" public chargers for vehicles like the Tesla or Porsche typically max out between 350 and 400 kW. Pumping 1,500 kW into a battery is like switching from a garden hose to a fire hydrant, allowing for significantly shorter stops than what most electric vehicle owners are used to today.

Refueling an EV might soon take as little time as grabbing a cup of coffee.

Heavy hydrogen trucks get a massive push in Germany

🚛

Major industrial giants have teamed up in Germany to bring hydrogen-powered heavy trucks to regular roads much faster. 🏢

Companies like Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, and Toyota are joining forces alongside partners such as Bosch, Air Liquide, and TotalEnergies. They want to build a complete local network of refueling stations before foreign competitors take over the market. If you follow logistics news, you know that long-haul drivers currently face a severe shortage of hydrogen pumps, which makes zero-emission freight extremely difficult to scale. ⛽

Unlike earlier scattered efforts by individual brands that stalled due to high costs, this unified coalition pools shared tech and resources to outpace foreign rivals rushing into the clean-energy transport sector. 📈

Clean freight is finally shifting from talk to concrete tarmac.

A new 1,600-hour stability record for solar cells

Researchers have successfully applied a protective coating to tin-based perovskite solar cells, allowing them to maintain 95% of their power output even after 1,600 hours of continuous operation. 🚀

These perovskite materials are naturally more efficient and cheaper to produce than the silicon panels currently found on most rooftops. They have long struggled with fragility, often breaking down quickly when exposed to air or moisture. This new 'raincoat' layer acts as a shield against that environmental decay.

➖ The coating is molecularly designed to block moisture without hindering light absorption.
➖ It completely eliminates the need for toxic lead, which was a major drawback of earlier prototypes.
➖ The cells maintain consistent output during continuous simulated sunlight tests.
➖ The process is designed for easy integration into existing industrial manufacturing lines.

While traditional silicon panels have dominated the energy sector for decades due to their long lifespan, early versions of perovskite solar cells often failed in just a matter of weeks. This development bridges the stability gap that previously kept this cheaper, more efficient technology from reaching your home.

Clean energy is finally gaining the durability it needs to move from the lab to the real world.

The era of fragile, short-lived solar tech is coming to an end.
