Electric heavy trucks mining 8,500 feet deep in Sudbury

Glencore Canada has fully transitioned to an all-electric operation at its nickel and copper mine in Sudbury, Ontario, reaching 8,500 feet below the surface.

Deep mining usually relies on heavy diesel engines that create hazardous fumes and extreme heat in narrow tunnels. This forces mines to run massive, energy-intensive ventilation systems just to keep the air safe for workers. By replacing these diesel machines with electric ones, the site reduces both emissions and the need for complex cooling and air circulation infrastructure.

This approach replaces the reliance on the heavy diesel-burning machinery that previously defined the extraction process at this specific location.

This change demonstrates that heavy industrial work deep underground can function cleanly.

Deep mining is finally ditching the diesel.

Enovis acquires eCential Robotics for $180 million

Enovis is taking a major step into the surgical market by acquiring eCential Robotics for $180 million.

The company aims to use this new technology to launch a robotic system for knee surgeries within 2 years. A system for shoulder procedures is planned to follow that. These robots essentially act as high-precision assistants for surgeons, helping them perform intricate bone cuts with more stability than the human hand alone.

This move puts Enovis in direct competition with industry giants like Stryker and Zimmer Biomet. These companies have dominated the robotic orthopedic space for years with their own established systems, making this a significant challenge for the newcomer.

It is a clear push to secure a spot alongside the major players in modern surgery.

Robots are quickly becoming standard tools in the operating room.

Xiaomi introduces its first 3nm AI chip

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its first custom-designed 3nm high-performance AI chip. This technology is engineered to power advanced autonomous driving features in the company's future electric vehicles. 🏎️

If you are curious about the "3nm" label, it refers to the size of the tiny transistors that make up the chip. A smaller size allows engineers to pack more power into a compact space, leading to faster data processing without draining the car's battery. By developing its own silicon, Xiaomi ensures the hardware is perfectly optimized for its specific software. ⚡

Currently, the popular Xiaomi SU7 relies on third-party hardware, specifically the Nvidia Drive Orin platform, to handle its self-driving tasks. Shifting to in-house production allows Xiaomi to reduce its dependence on external suppliers, much like the approach Tesla used when it began creating its own custom processors to manage its autopilot systems. 🔋

Developing the engine of the car's brain is a major power move.

Equinor opens Citrus Flatts in Harlingen

Equinor subsidiary East Point Energy has launched operations at the Citrus Flatts energy storage project in Harlingen, Texas. The facility adds 100 MW of flexible capacity to the state's power grid, helping to balance supply and demand. ⚡

Think of this installation as a massive, industrial-grade power bank for the region. It pulls in electricity when it is cheap or abundant and releases it into the system exactly when residents need it most. This site holds 200 MWh of storage, making it the largest project of its kind that Equinor has built in the U.S. to date.

While many household or office storage solutions handle only small amounts of power, this setup is designed to stabilize the infrastructure for an entire region. It marks a clear step up in scale compared to the company's previous, smaller battery pilots in the U.S. market.

Big batteries keep the lights on when the grid gets tight.

PG&E will pay up to $17,000 to use your electric car as a home battery

Drivers in California can now receive up to $17,000 in incentives by using their electric vehicle as a backup power source through an expanded program from PG&E.

The technology is called V2X, or Vehicle-to-Everything. Think of it as turning your car into a mobile power bank for your house. When your local grid needs a boost, your parked car feeds energy back into your home systems. You can now enroll specific models from Tesla, Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan.

The utility has brought in Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex to manage the technology. Owners have until June 30, 2027, to sign up and start claiming these payments.

For comparison, purchasing a standalone home battery like a Tesla Powerwall often costs around $10,000 or more, excluding installation. This program effectively lets you use the battery you already own for driving to solve your home energy needs while getting paid.

It is a clever way to turn a parked asset into a personal power plant.

Hidden energy in the Pilbara region

Researchers at Edith Cowan University discovered that iron-rich rocks in the Pilbara region of Western Australia can generate hydrogen naturally. 🌍 This chemical process happens when minerals buried deep underground meet hot water.

The team, led by Associate Professor Alireza Keshavarz, identified a way to stimulate this reaction by injecting a solution into the rock formations.
"Australia could be sitting on a massive, untapped energy reserve, and the potential is enormous."
This means we could potentially scale up this natural production to create a significant source of clean energy. 🚀

Unlike renewable projects like wind or solar farms which often require clearing vast swathes of land for new infrastructure, this discovery offers a unique advantage. By leveraging the existing geology of the region, this method could turn a resource-heavy hub into a clean, self-replenishing power source without the massive surface-level footprint.

The fuel of the future might be hiding in our own backyard.

How Pokémon Go Data Built a New Navigation System for Drones

Millions of people playing Pokémon Go accidentally mapped real-world locations, and that data now gives drones 1.5-meter precision without GPS.

Late last year, Niantic signed a deal with a US defense contractor to adapt their spatial AI model for high-precision drone flight. Instead of relying on vulnerable satellite signals, the drones analyze billions of user-contributed 3D points captured during gameplay to figure out exactly where they are.

Standard GPS signals often get lost or jammed between tall buildings, while older offline navigation methods required expensive, custom-built aerial scans. Rigorous tests of the new AI system showed an error reduction of up to 70% compared to standard positioning tools.

It turns out your virtual monster hunts left behind a permanent blueprint of the physical world.

Your casual gaming session is now shaping military hardware.

Donald Trump bans foreign-made grid equipment

Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to protect the power grid in the United States. The mandate restricts the acquisition of transformers, inverters, and circuit breakers from abroad. This action seeks to protect the power infrastructure from potential digital and physical threats.

The order targets hardware like transformers, circuit breakers, and inverters—the essential devices that move electricity from power plants to your home. It also introduces new rules for complex software and digital systems, which are increasingly critical to energy management. Manufacturers are now looking for clarity on how to verify the country of origin for these digital components.

Previously, utility companies could source grid hardware globally with less attention on the digital supply chain. Unlike the earlier, strictly hardware-focused regulations, this new directive forces the industry to monitor the provenance of every software element embedded in its machines.

Security now starts at the power plant.

New metal foam cuts crash severity by 48%

Engineers have developed a new metal foam that absorbs kinetic energy so effectively it can reduce the severity of a car crash by 48%. 🚗

This material is built to sit inside a vehicle’s front rails. When a collision happens, the foam deforms, slowing down the impact forces before they reach the passengers. It provides a way to increase safety without the typical downsides of adding heavy armor or extra bracing.

➖ It keeps the vehicle's total weight low.
➖ It preserves fuel economy and battery range.
➖ It functions without requiring major changes to the overall frame design.

Traditional steel rails are rigid and heavy, meaning they often fail to dissipate energy as gracefully as this lightweight, porous foam does. It is a smart way to make vehicles safer without asking the driver to sacrifice efficiency.

Physics doing the heavy lifting.

🚨 #BREAKING Tesla deploys Cybercab fleet in Austin

Tesla has officially put its Cybercab fleet on the streets of Austin, Texas, reaching a milestone of over 1,000,000 miles driven without human supervision.

These two-seater vehicles lack steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors. You can now spot them carrying paying passengers throughout the city, and the company has opened the platform to allow third-party fleet purchases.

⚠️ The rollout faces immediate scrutiny. The NHTSA has opened an audit into how these vehicles were certified as road-legal. This rapid growth is evident, as the fleet had traveled less than half of this distance just 6 weeks ago.

Progress often picks up speed, but regulators are watching closely.
