James Archer
*“A Dog Mourning Its Little Master,” 1866*

In 1860s Britain, this painting was no far-fetched idea—it reflected a grim reality. In the Victorian era, childhood deaths from scarlet fever, measles, and diphtheria were tragically common. Artists often turned to scenes of domestic grief to help people process personal loss.

James Archer, known for his historical subjects and portraits of children, leaves the people out of the scene, placing the animal alone with its sorrow. The choice highlights the dog’s utter sincerity and unconditional devotion. It cannot understand the finality of death, but it knows someone it loves is gone.
