Edvard Munch
*The Scream*, 1893

A landmark of Expressionism and one of the most famous paintings in the world, *The Scream* has inspired two interpretations of its central figure: perhaps the figure is overwhelmed with terror, silently screaming with hands pressed to its ears—or perhaps it is covering its ears against the scream of the world and nature.

Munch created four versions of *The Scream*. One theory holds that the painting grew out of the manic-depressive illness he experienced. After treatment at a clinic, Munch never returned to the work.
