A Time Capsule Hidden in a Crucifix
A Baroque wooden “Suffering Christ,” made in 1777, was being restored at Spain’s Santa Águeda church when experts discovered a hidden compartment near its hips. Inside were two parchment sheets, placed in a hollow designed to prevent the wood from cracking.
The documents revealed the sculptor’s name, Manuel del Valle, and a message from the 18th century. Chaplain Joaquín Mínguez described life under King Charles III, the Inquisition, typhus outbreaks and parishioners’ love of card games.
The crucifix still stands in Sotillo de la Ribera and joins Easter processions. The original letter is archived; an exact copy has been returned to the hidden compartment.
