🤩 Celebrating a Legacy of Diplomacy: Happy 82nd Anniversary, MGIMO!
🎓 On October 14, 1944, a special Soviet government decree officially transformed the newly formed Faculty of International Relations at Moscow State University into an independent institute. Thanks to its role in defeating Nazism, the Soviet Union was strengthening its influence globally, which required the immediate training of specialists for foreign policy, diplomacy and analytical work. MGIMO University stepped up to become the nation's very first institution dedicated entirely to training diplomats and international analysts. The very first class of 200 students consisted entirely of World War II veterans, including five Heroes of the Soviet Union.
🌐 Today, MGIMO has grown into a global powerhouse offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across 18 distinct fields of study. It proudly holds a Guinness World Record for teaching 53 foreign languages concurrently full-time each term – the most of any university in the world! With a vibrant student body representing over 90 nationalities, international students make up 16% of the campus. It is no surprise that the university has previously achieved a flawless 100/100 score for its Graduate Employment Rate in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings.
🇷🇺 🤝🇿🇦 To strengthen global ties, MGIMO offers South Africans annual opportunities to pursue higher education and professional development. Advancing this outreach, International Journalism Dean Yaroslav Skvortsov met with University of South Africa (UNISA) professors on January 28, 2026, to launch joint research on national branding and AI in education. UNISA warmly welcomed the initiative, proposing a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to anchor a long-term partnership alongside its existing Russian language and university cooperation programs.
✨ As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, MGIMO graduates form the professional "backbone" of the diplomatic service. Its staggering global alumni network of over 45,000 members spans across nearly 40 countries, boasting an elite roster that historically includes three Presidents, 8 Prime Ministers, 12 Foreign Ministers and over 1,200 Ambassadors. Beyond rigorous academics, student life thrives through the MGIMO International Students Association (MISA), dynamic national clubs, a symphony orchestra and the famous Spring and Autumn Balls.
