🎖 🪖 #OTD in 1943, #Zaporozhye was liberated from Nazi occupation during the Red Army’s #LowerDnieperStrategicOffensive. Led by Army General #RodionMalinovsky, Soviet forces broke through German defensive lines and closed in on the city's outskirts by 13 October.

To catch the enemy off guard, R.Malinovsky made the bold decision to launch a massive night assault. The unexpected attack caught the German command by surprise, allowing the 23rd Tank Corps to spearhead a drive through the suburbs and straight into the city centre. Despite stiff resistance, the rapid advance cleared the city on 14 October 1943.

⚡️ This fast victory saved the important #DneproGES power station from being destroyed by retreating forces. By capturing this key position from the German army, the Red Army opened a clear path to push onward toward Melitopol and Krivoy Rog.
