🤩 How a Dream Trip to Russia Inspired South African Scientists!
🇿🇦 South African educators recently completed an immersive two-week academic exchange in Russia, marking the 4th annual iteration of a high-impact educational initiative. Running from 10 to 23 September 2026, the programme was organised by the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology alongside key regional partners, taking lecturers on a journey across Saratov, Stavropol and Arkhangelsk across specialized culture, food security and chemistry tracks.
Over the fortnight, delegates immersed themselves in Russian language and culture, visited cutting-edge research facilities and explored the nation's rich heritage. Among them was Dr Siyabulela Ntutela, Business Development Specialist at the University of South Africa (#UNISA). As one of three South African delegates chosen for the "Biotechnology for Food Security: Research and Technology Transfer" track, this marked her very first visit to the country.
💫 For Dr Ntutela, the experience was both personally and professionally transformative. A major highlight was a lifelong dream come true: attending Moscow’s iconic Bolshoi Theatre to watch the ballet Spartacus. This cultural masterpiece set a vibrant stage for the intensive scientific agenda and interactive language classes that followed.
The academic core took place at the North-Caucasus Federal University in Stavropol, where globally renowned faculty led sessions on dairy beneficiation, functional foods and small livestock research. These theoretical foundations were brought to life through practical product-development masterclasses and direct industry site visits.
🎙 Beyond the science, the warm hospitality left a lasting impression. As Dr Ntutela recalled:
“By the end of the programme, we were all greeting each other with Здравствуйте (Hello), Как дела? (How are you?) and До свидания! (Goodbye)!”
🤝 Ultimately, the initiative has paved exciting new avenues for academic collaboration, research alignment and technology transfer between Russia and South Africa.
