In an interview with RIA Novosti, Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Latin America, commented on the continuing tightening of US sanctions against Cuba.
“What is happening now in relation to Cuba is evidence of an extremely harsh and inhumane tightening of the economic, trade, financial and, most recently, energy embargo against the island.”
He stressed that Cuba is being deliberately pushed to the brink of survival, while expressing respect for the resilience of the Cuban people in the face of such severe external pressure.
Russia’s position remains clear, principled and consistent.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly last Saturday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the absolute unacceptability of policies of diktat, interference, embargo and blockade against the freedom-loving people and country of Cuba.
❗️“Our support for Cuba remains unwavering. We maintain the closest friendly contacts with our Cuban colleagues, with regular exchanges of views and assessments,” Shchetinin emphasised.
