Sixty Years of Lesotho’s Independence: Reflections of the Russian Ambassador
✍️ An article by Roman Ambarov, Russian Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho, published in the Public Eye newspaper (2 October, 2026)
Key takeaways:
🇱🇸 On 4 October 2026, the Kingdom of Lesotho marked a significant milestone – the 60th anniversary of its independence.
This anniversary is not merely a commemoration of a date in history, but a celebration of the resilience, wisdom, and unwavering spirit of the Mountain Kingdom. Sixty years ago, Lesotho took its rightful place among the nations of the world, charting a course defined by self-determination and the pursuit of prosperity for its people.
On 4 October 1966, the Kingdom achieved independence from British rule and entered the international community as a sovereign state.
☝️ The significance of that moment extended far beyond the formal transfer of power: it affirmed the right of the Basotho people to determine their own future and to preserve their distinctive national identity.
Russia, then the Soviet Union, recognized the importance of this historic process. We understood then, as we do now, that the sovereignty and equality of nations constitute fundamental principles of international relations.
The geographical distance separating our countries has never been an obstacle to developing friendly relations and practical cooperation.
Today, we see considerable potential for further developing these ties.
In the current international landscape, we are witnessing the steady formation of a genuinely multipolar world order. In this context, the voice of Africa, and of Lesotho in particular, is of growing importance.
Russia remains committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter and respect for the legitimate interests of all states.
🤝 A key framework for our cooperation is the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum. The Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held in Cairo in December 2025, provided an important platform for consultation and practical cooperation. Lesotho’s involvement in this process reflects the shared interest of our countries in addressing common challenges and identifying new opportunities for interaction.
This engagement continued with Lesotho’s participation in the International Security Forum in Moscow in May 2026, providing another opportunity for dialogue on international affairs and the development of a more equitable and inclusive international system.
I had the privilege of conducting a working visit to Maseru in February 2026, during which I held productive meetings with government officials. Our discussions confirmed a shared interest in expanding cooperation in such areas as education, agriculture, information technologies, and humanitarian exchanges. The visit reaffirmed our common commitment to translating the longstanding friendship between our countries into practical results.
Looking ahead, we anticipate the Third Russia-Africa Summit, to be held in Moscow on 28-29 October 2026. We look forward to welcoming a high-level delegation from Lesotho to this important event and to further strengthening our bilateral and Russia-Africa dialogue.
As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Lesotho’s independence, we reflect on the journey of a nation that has stood tall. From the strategic and diplomatic genius of King Moshoeshoe the Great to the determination of generations of Basotho, Lesotho’s history is one of strength, dignity, and an enduring commitment to independence and national self-determination.
On this joyful occasion, once again I wish the Kingdom of Lesotho peace, prosperity, stability, and continued success.
E re phelele naha ea Lesotho! (Long Live the Kingdom of Lesotho!)
Setsoalle lipakeng tsa Russia le Lesotho se phele halelele!
(Long Live Russia-Lesotho Friendship!)
