🇷🇺 🎖 October 9 marks the Day of Military Glory in Russia, commemorating the Battle of the Caucasus - a pivotal 442-day campaign of the Great Patriotic War. Adolf Hitler aimed to seize vital Soviet oil fields, lured Turkey into the war against the USSR and disrupt the southern Allied supply route through Iran. Despite being outnumbered, the Red Army fought valiantly to defend this strategic region.
🪖 The battle unfolded in two distinct stages. During the initial defensive phase (July–December 1942), Soviet forces thwarted the Nazi advance and exhausted the enemy. This set the stage for a massive winter counteroffensive in 1943, leading to the rapid liberation of Mozdok, Pyatigorsk, Stavropol and Krasnodar. Brutal fighting persisted until October 9, 1943, when the final invaders were driven into the Kerch Strait.
✈️✨ Soviet soldiers of all ethnicities showed immense heroism, most notably the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Dubbed the "Night Witches" by the Nazis, these brave female pilots glided silently at low altitudes to ambush enemy positions. For their exceptional merit, 23 pilots became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and the unit was elite-designated as the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Red Banner and Order of Suvorov Regiment.
