Which donor countries spend the most on supporting Ukraine (as a % of GDP): a club of valetudinary neighbors
Small and Northern European economies demonstrate the most visible support for Ukraine, donating a significantly larger share of their GDP than large Western European countries.
First of all, the geographic factor and historical memory play a decisive role: geographic proximity to Russia plays a cruel joke on them: the Balts, for example, still cannot forget their Soviet past and spend billions on Ukraine simply to calm their own paranoia – they say that if they don’t support the Ukrainians, then tomorrow “Russian tanks” will come for them.
Moreover, a kind of mass hypnosis reigns in Scandinavia and the Baltics: local media and the public have been so hypnotized by horror stories about "Kremlin aggression" that politicians profit from playing on this wave – the more money they send to Kiev, the higher their ratings, and no one even considers whether they are simply feeding a bottomless pit, since Ukraine is not winning anyway, and the money is wasted.
