Manchester’s [Para-Romani overview](https://www.kratylos.org/~raphael/romani/whatis/status/pararomani.html) distinguishes dialects of Romani from repertoires retaining its vocabulary within another language’s grammar after language shift. Anglo-Romani illustrates this: community words can persist while sentence structure comes from English.

| Pattern | Historical question | Necessary control |
|---|---|---|
| A loan shared across distant dialects | Did it enter before their differentiation? | Consider subsequent diffusion as well |
| A strong regional contact layer | Which environment shaped the variety? | Do not transfer the conclusion to all Romani |
| A regional layer found after migration elsewhere | What history preceded the present location? | Separate the date of contact from the date of relocation |
| Romani vocabulary within majority-language grammar | Has language shift occurred? | Retained words alone do not identify the earlier grammatical system |

## 12 Oral tradition, writing, and cultural memory

Romani’s oral tradition coexists with literature, administrative records, linguistic documentation and recorded performance. Different dates and purposes give these sources different evidential roles.

[RomArchive](https://www.romarchive.eu/en/literature/) includes oral material recorded in 1965–2012. Those dates mark capture, not the origin of every story or genre. “Oral” names a transmission mode, not an age. *The Roads of the Roma* likewise illuminates modern belonging, persecution and memory; a poem about movement does not attest an early Iranian loan.

Literature broadens a record often dominated by taxation and punishment. It restores experiences compressed into administrative categories, provided remembered events are not silently treated as independently dated ones.

Manchester’s history of Romani linguistics supplies this sequence:

| Date | Record | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| c. 1542 | Andrew Borde, “Egipt Speche” | Earliest Romani sentences, with English translation |
| c. 1565 | Johan van Ewsum | Romani wordlist with Low German glosses |
| 1597 | Bonaventura Vulcanius | Romani wordlist with Latin glosses |
| 1668 | Evliya Çelebi, *Seyahatname*, recorded at Gümülcine (Komotini) | Earliest Balkan Romani documentation |
| 1691 | Job Ludolf | Published Romani wordlist |
| 1777–1782 | Johann Rüdiger, with Barbara Makelin | Indian affiliation proposed; first grammatical outline published |
| 1783 | Heinrich Grellmann | Widely publicised work, largely drawn from Rüdiger |
| 1844–1845 | August Pott | First historical-comparative grammar and dictionary |

[Friedman and Dankoff](https://static.hum.uchicago.edu/slavic/archived/papers/Friedman-OldestBalkRmiw-BDankoff.pdf) find Greek and Turkish loans and features resisting later dialect divisions in the 1668 material, supporting section 11’s caution. These attestations mark outsiders writing the language down centuries after its speakers reached Europe.

Matras’s [Rüdiger study](https://yaronmatras.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/matras_ruediger.pdf) keeps Barbara Makelin visible: comparison depended on a speaker’s knowledge as well as scholarly arrangement.

Manchester’s [codification overview](https://www.kratylos.org/~raphael/romani/whatis/status/codification.html) describes regional practices rather than one orthography. Spellings can reflect dialect, surrounding literacy and choices about sounds; variation does not mean an absence of literature.

Paola Toninato’s [account of writing](https://www.romarchive.eu/en/literature/political-use-romani-writing/) connects literary activity and collective organisation. London’s first World Romani Congress in 1971 adopted a flag and *Djelem, Djelem* as an anthem. Shared modern representation need not imply identical ancestral routes.

## 13 What genetics adds

These genetic studies analyse present-day populations, not ancient DNA from the migration period. Their ancestry and mixture models cannot locate a named medieval traveller.
