Embarrassing Failure
I'm a CFII currently job hunting,
I only have one failure and that was my CFI Instrument Practical Exam, build up and preperation was absolutely perfect, my instructors had no doubt that I would pass, I passed the ground portion and we moved on to the flight, we did the ILS and it was sloppy but within tolerences, I honestly should have discontinued right here because I knew immediately I wasn't on my A game, I had probably flown 15 ILS approaches in my preperation for this exam (I had a long wait for an examiner so I spent a lot of time staying proficient) and none of them were anything like this one, we than moved on to the circle to land portion, I'm turning base to final and I noticed I was about 10 knots fast so I brought the power back and let a high sink rate develop, I fly in Arizona and this was during the summer, I sunk right through ground effect and the examiner pulled the nose back and we bounced, I initiated a go around and after I cleaned up the plane he told me I failed, I retook the exam a week later and passed, on my second attempt my examiner initially wanted to see 3 landings as he said he was concerned that I was at this level and struggling with landings, I told him I just had a bad day that day, and after we did the first landing he was satisfied and told me we could taxi back to parking. I WISH I DID A GO AROUND.
I hate that I'm a CFI and that an examiner intervened because he was concerned for the safety of the flight, I have almost 400 hours and I keep telling myself this isn't something someone on my level should be messing up on, however I took the failure as a learning lesson and I appreciate the failure because I know in the future if I'm not 110% confident with an approach for any reason I will think back to this moment and do a go around, and will never try to salvage a bad landing. But it's on my record now that my examiner had to intervene and I feel like that's the worst way to fail a checkride. I just want some criticism or advice, be blunt I did something stupid that's taught at a private pilot level NEVER TRY TO SALVAGE A BAD LANDING.
