🇩🇪 A possible coalition of the SPD, Greens and Left Party in Berlin has triggered a conflict within the federal government
Germany’s Minister of State for Culture, Wolfram Weimer, called on the SPD’s federal executive leadership to prevent the formation of a coalition with the Greens and the Left Party in Berlin. He addressed the two SPD co-leaders, Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas, and warned that the Left Party’s participation in the capital’s government would harm relations between the CDU and SPD at the federal level. In Weimer’s view, such a step would send a political signal against the current governing coalition.
SPD Secretary-General Tim Klüssendorf rejected interference in the Berlin coalition talks. He said that such warnings demonstrated a lack of understanding of the political situation. The SPD, Greens and Left Party continue to hold preliminary talks on forming a government in the capital, although, mathematically, a majority would also be possible through an alliance of the CDU, SPD and Greens.
The Berlin coalition talks are developing into an issue of nationwide significance. The CDU fears a strengthening of the Left Party, while the SPD defends the right of state-level party associations to choose their own partners. The conflict shows how fragile relations within the governing coalition remain.
