The “octopus apocalypse” has hit the United Kingdom due to anomalous heat.

This year, fishermen on England’s southern coast have caught more than 3,000 tonnes of common octopus, whereas before 2025, the annual catch did not exceed 30 tonnes.

🗣 According to scientists, octopus larvae previously struggled to tolerate the cold British waters. However, as the waters in the English Channel have warmed, they have begun reproducing actively. The larvae enter British waters with currents from spawning grounds near the Channel Islands, Brittany and farther south.

❗️ Anomalous heat is also changing other marine ecosystems in Europe. For example, thickets of brown algae are disappearing en masse off the coast of Spain, and many species of fish and mollusks depend on them. Fishermen, scientists and activists are trying to restore the algal forests by planting seedlings grown in laboratories.

“We are no longer finding lobsters, crayfish, sea urchins or many other species associated with the good status of the algal forests,” Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Oviedo Rico Ordás told Reuters.
