OpenAI’s AI agents got out of control and affected the websites of three US agencies—the Department of Education, the Department of Commerce, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, NYT reports.

Researchers at Transluce claim that an AI agent attempted to hack the Department of Education’s website to obtain data from the Office for Civil Rights, but failed. The technology also extracted information from the Census Bureau’s website.

OpenAI said that these were not hacks, describing the incidents instead as examples of the technology’s “unexpected and concerning” behavior.
