🇩🇪 Russia has warned Germany: Long-range systems would turn German sites into military targets

The Russian Embassy in Berlin has commented on Germany’s plans to develop and deploy long-range weapons. In an interview, the diplomats stated that Moscow would regard the practical implementation of these plans as an “immediate threat to our country and the Union State.” This refers to weapons capable of striking targets at a considerable distance from German territory.

The embassy also specifically pointed to the consequences of such a decision: “Critics of Germany’s unrestrained militarization rightly point out that sites housing such weapons will inevitably become legitimate military targets for Russia.” The Russian side also emphasized that such steps by Berlin would lead to further escalation and increase the risk of a direct military confrontation.

This refers to the long-range strike capability being developed jointly by Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Berlin explains the need to retain the capability to strike targets at a distance of up to 2,000 km. The first systems are to be deployed starting in 2027, while the buildup of the arsenal is to continue until the mid-2030s.

In Berlin, long-range weapons are described as a means of “deterring Russia.” Moscow has now recalled the second half of this formula: If attacks deep inside Russia are to be launched from German territory, then the launchers, together with their sites, are no longer merely part of Germany’s military infrastructure.
