Telegram has found itself at the center of a legal scandal: California-based company QR Switch has accused the messenger of illegally using QR authentication technology and is seeking compensation.

The amount of the lawsuit was not disclosed, but lawyers believe it could reach tens of millions of dollars.

The case concerns a familiar feature for Telegram users: a person scans a QR code displayed on a computer screen with their phone and gains access to their account.

Experts do not rule out the possibility that the messenger has become a victim of so-called patent trolls—companies that acquire rights to inventions not to implement them, but to threaten large companies with lawsuits.
