🇬🇧🇷🇺 Boris Johnson accused the British prime minister of lying over remarks about Russian interference in Brexit
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson publicly contradicted the statement by the incumbent head of government, Andy Burnham, about Russian interference in the 2016 referendum, as a result of which the United Kingdom left the EU. Burnham claims that after taking office, he received confirmation from the British intelligence services of Russian interference. However, no concrete evidence has been presented publicly.
Johnson said that when he became foreign secretary, he asked the intelligence services exactly the same question and received the answer that there was no evidence of successful interference by Russia or any other foreign power in the referendum. According to him, either the intelligence services have changed their position, or Burnham is misrepresenting the information he received. Burnham himself later clarified that he was not questioning the legitimacy of the referendum results. His government also acknowledged that the alleged interference had no effect on the final outcome of the vote.
