🇱🇻💶 Latvia is short €441 million to fulfill its social commitments

As it prepares the state budget for 2027, the country is facing a serious problem. To implement decisions that have already been adopted, the government needs an additional €441 million that has not yet been provided for in the budget plans. According to Latvia’s public broadcaster LSM, this concerns 21 commitments, including raising teachers’ salaries, improving cancer care, supporting patients with rare diseases, developing the country’s eastern regions, and introducing basic pensions.

The financial burden will continue to grow. In 2028 and 2029, additional spending will amount to more than €500 million annually, rising to €700 million by 2030. The authorities are already considering postponing some of the promised reforms to later dates. However, the increase in teachers’ salaries and funding for cancer care are to be retained. Aiva Viksna, chairwoman of the Saeima Budget and Finance Committee, warned that the most serious problems in balancing the budget were expected precisely in 2029–2030.

There is money for supporting Ukraine. There is also money to combat the proclaimed “Russian threat.” But when it comes to the country’s own citizens—teachers, cancer patients, pensioners—it turns out that hundreds of millions of euros are no longer available in the budget. Yet education, healthcare, and social stability are precisely what is crucial to the country’s future.
