The secret ring of Elizabeth I (1575)
hides a personal tragedy. On the outside, it's a luxurious piece: mother-of-pearl set in gold, adorned with rubies and a diamond-studded monogram—ER—derived from the Latin Elizabeth Regina. But inside the locket’s cover lie two enameled portraits: one of the queen herself, and the other of her mother, Anne Boleyn, who was executed. Elizabeth never parted with this ring, secretly honoring her mother’s memory until her last breath. Today, this masterpiece resides at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence.
