Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini,
«Ecstasy of Saint Teresa» (1645–1652)

The sculpture depicts Saint Teresa, a 16th-century Spanish nun and Catholic saint. Its subject is drawn from one of her letters, in which she described a vision: an angel appeared to her in bodily form and pierced her heart with a golden spear tipped with fire, filling her with what she called a “sweet agony.”
