Amedeo Modigliani
Jeanne Hébuterne with a Scarf, 1919
A love story:
Can you love someone more than life itself? This is one of Modigliani’s last portraits of his muse, painted shortly before their tragic deaths. Jeanne appears in his unmistakable style: a swanlike neck, pupil-less almond eyes and softly flowing lines. Captivated by her melancholy beauty, he painted her around 25 times during their turbulent three years together. She was his ideal, lifeline and the mother of their daughter.
The painting seems to foretell what was to come. In January 1920, Modigliani died of tuberculosis. Jeanne, pregnant with their second child, sat silently by the window for hours, then stepped out at dawn, falling from the sixth floor. Their love endured beyond death: ten years later, her family had her reburied beside her beloved Modi. Look closely at the scarf around her neck—it seems to symbolize the thread that bound them forever.
