Édouard Manet
Railway, 1873
Manet managed to paint a train without actually depicting it—on the canvas, all that remains of the train are swirling clouds of steam. He transformed this fleeting, ephemeral moment into eternity, as if affirming his core manifesto: "It’s not enough to master your craft—you must feel. Knowledge is admirable, but imagination means far more to us."
