Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895) — the defiant pioneer of Austrian painting, key to the rise of the Vienna Secession. A former officer, he abandoned military life at thirty, bringing bold French Impressionism from Paris to conservative Vienna. He rejected polished academic art, painting raw, living scenes with fierce brushwork. Dismissed as “dirty smearing” by professors and boycotted by the Künstlerhaus, he stood firm. His rebellion became the ideological spark for the 1897 Secession split, demanding artistic freedom and independent shows. Though he died two years before its founding, Hörmann’s lone stand cracked the wall later shattered by Klimt.
