Vladimir Makovsky
"Stop Right There!", 1892
Makovsky's painting is piercingly realistic. A desperate woman blocks the tavern entrance, shielding it with her body. Her eyes, nearly wild with despair, reflect the agony of helplessness. Her half-open mouth gasps for air in ragged breaths. Clinging to her knees is a pale child, frail and silent. The boy has long outgrown his jacket—its sleeves barely cover his sharp elbows.
One would think this mother and child could inspire nothing but sympathy and sorrow in anyone who sees them. Yet, to the person closest to them, their suffering is merely an obstacle.
