The story of Pepsi-Cola Company in the 1950-1960s can be seen as a striking example of radical brand repositioning that spilled into the field of architecture. When he took charge of the company in 1950, Alfred Steel changed Pepsi-Cola’s identity so drastically that its revenues jumped 10-fold over the next decade. Apart from changing Pepsi’s organizational structure, building multiple production sites, launching a sugarless version of Pepsi-Cola, and revisiting marketing strategies, Steel also decided to give a complete overhaul to the company’s architectural image by commissioning Skidmore, Owings & Merril to design a brand-new HQ building in New York City in 1958.
We’re intentionally illustrating this note with black-and-white images by the great Ezra Stoller as the building has changed over the years.
