Как известно, в Швейцарии говорят на четырех государственных языках. В швейцарском дизайне языков тоже несколько. Например, в 1964 г. в Цюрихе появился новый светильник, которые вполне можно было принять за итальянское изделие.

Его авторами были супруги Бальтеншвайлеры. Проникшись эстетикой Space Age, они создали целое семейство светильников, состоявших из пластиковой основы и усеченного сферического плафона. Плафон из матового стекла помещался в цилиндрическое основание и свободно вращался в нем без каких-либо креплений и шарниров, позволяя регулировать направление и интенсивность света.

Кроме того, благодаря модульной конструкции основание можно было наращивать, превращая настольный светильник в торшер. Количество источников света тоже можно было увеличивать по мере необходимости.

Примечательно, что и название у этого семейства было говорящим: на швейцарском немецком Guggerli означает «любопытный малыш».

As everyone knows, Switzerland has four national languages. Swiss design, too, speaks more than one.
In 1964, for example, a new lamp was produced in Zurich that could easily have been mistaken for an Italian design.

It was created by Rosemarie and Rico Baltensweiler. Embracing the aesthetics of the Space Age, the couple designed an entire family of lamps built from two basic elements: a plastic base and a truncated spherical shade. The frosted-glass shade simply sat inside the cylindrical base, with no hinges or fasteners at all. Free to rotate within it, the shade could be tilted in different directions, allowing both the direction and intensity of the light to be adjusted.

The design had another trick up its sleeve. Thanks to its modular construction, additional sections could be added to the base, gradually transforming a small table lamp into a floor lamp. The number of lamps could also be expanded as necessary.

Even the family’s name was rather fitting: in Swiss German, Guggerli means “a little peeker.”
