Looking at these photos by Ezra Stoller, many of you must have recognized the interiors of the House in the Museum Garden built on MoMA’s premises in 1949 by Marcel Breuer. We may talk about the floorplans of the house itself later and, now, would like you to focus on the lighting fixtures in these rooms. How many can you find?
On September 25th, 1949, one month before the exhibition would end, the New York Times published an article by Breuer titled “PROBLEM OF LAMPS; Discussion of Function They Should Perform”. Having had to resort to wall-mounted spotlights and “horizontal, wall-strip, indirect fluorscent lighting units” in his house for MoMA, Breuer wrote:
“Probably no other home furnishing accessory today is so unsuited to its purpose, esthetically and functionally, as the lamp. We have lamps made like flowers, like swans, like works of art, on the one hand - or symbols of chromium philosophy, on the other.”
