Meet Kaleidoscreen, a functional scultpture installed in Aspen in 1957 as a collaboration between Austrian artist Herbert Bayer and ALCOA. The sculpture was to protect visitors of an outdoor pool from wind and sunlight (now demolished, the pool was covered by a Bucky dome).
In 1938, Bayer, one of Bauhaus masters, moved to NYC where he met Walter Paepcke, a Chicago industrialist and patron of another Bauhaus figure, László Moholy-Nagy (Paepcke financed the establishment of New Bauhaus in Chicago). At the time of their encounter, Paepcke was investing in making Aspen, a Colorado town of about 700, great again by turning it into a world-class skiing resort. He offered Bayer to be part of this transformation. The artist agreed, moved to Aspen in 1946, and for the next 30 years was instrumental in promoting Aspen as an important cultural destination. This is just a teaser for future pieces on Bauhaus in Aspen, so stay tuned!
