Let’s end this week with yet another note on reincarnations of and tributes to iconic modernist pieces. Since it’s time for another installment of Sunday Postmodernism, we’ll make sure to add a postmodernist chord to this discussion.
In 1963, 75-year-old Gerrit Rietveld was commissioned to refurbish the Steltman Jewelry Shop in the Hague. For this project, the architect designed two chairs to be placed in front of a showcase with wedding rings enabling soon-to-wed couples to make their choice comfortably and unhurriedly. Being each other’s opposites, the two mirrored chairs formed a unity together – much like a married couple would.
