We’ve mentioned already that Jacobsen designed the hotel as a gesamtkunstwerk and was, therefore, responsible for both the exterior and all of the interior design and furnishings, down to wine glasses, cutlery, and even bed covers. Since Jacobsen assumed an undivided responsibility for the building as a whole, he was able to counterbalance the sleek minimalism of the exterior with the softness of forms and quiet shades of the interior. The lobby of the hotel welcomed visitors with a number of Egg chairs, each a homely enclosure that protected the seater from the world around as if they found themselves back in the safety of their mother’s womb.
