The famous chess set designed in 1923-1924 by Joseph Hartwig, a student at Bauhaus. In line with the “form follows function” concept of the time, Hartwig cleared the figures of all religious, military, and royal symbolism and concentrated on their values and function instead.
The rook, which moves at a right angle to the edge of the board, is shaped as a cube (so are the pawns, but they are smaller because of their inferiority to the rooks). The knight is L-shaped as it moves in a right-angled hook.
