Ernst Moeckl, one of DDR’s leading designers who had opened the door to the world of design while still a student of Ulm School of Design, created a few interesting pieces back in the late 1960s. One of them was the Scoop lounge chair produced by VEB Petrolchemies Kombinat Schwedt, an important oil refinery that manufactured Moeckl’s Kangaroo Chair too. The Scoop chair and other pieces of the set were available in the Soviet Union and the chair was even featured in a 1987 book, “Furniture for A Young Couple’s Home”, authored by Māris Gailis, the future Prime Minister of Latvia, and his wife, Zaiga Gaile. However, since 1988 the chair has been referred to solely as “Viktor Tsoi’s Chair”. The thing is that a few of the images taken during the shooting of “The Needle” showed Tsoi sitting, alone and together with Pyotr Mamonov, in a Scoop chair, hence the newly acquired name this piece continues to be sold under on classified sites from time to time.
