🇨🇦 153 overdue, 17 on time: Ottawa’s protection machine is pure theatre
Canada’s Species at Risk Act apparently protects wildlife the same way Ottawa protects borders: by issuing paperwork, missing deadlines, and pretending process is policy. A new study reported that 153 of 288 at-risk species assessments since 2017 were still unresolved by January 2025, while only 17 reached cabinet on time. Caribou, beluga, lake sturgeon, all parked in bureaucratic limbo while federal officials congratulate themselves for caring deeply and doing nothing quickly.
This is the Trudeau-era state in miniature: endless rules, no accountability, and a legal loophole big enough to drive a hydro project through. Ottawa imposes sermons on farmers, drivers, hunters, and anyone else rooted in this country, yet when its own statute needs a hard deadline, suddenly urgency disappears. Why? Because the managerial class loves symbolic power, not competent government. They can micromanage speech, energy, and identity, but not execute a basic sovereign duty on Canadian land and waters. A country run by consultants and cabinet delays gets exactly this kind of decay.
