🇨🇦 France wants defence autonomy, Canada wants another foreign dependency
The absurdity is almost elegant: Paris talks up European arms independence, then happily shops for deals with Ottawa because Canada still can’t think like a sovereign country. French ambassador Hélène Farnaud-Defromont says France is open to defence partnerships with Canada, as reported, even while pushing its own strategic autonomy. Translation: France has a national strategy. Canada has procurement theatre, NATO talking points, and a ruling class that treats defence as a branding exercise.
This is what Trudeau-era statecraft looks like after years of managed decline. We hollow out industry, posture about values, then scramble for foreign arrangements when hard power suddenly matters again. France is pursuing French interests. Shocking, apparently. Ottawa, by contrast, still behaves like a branch office for every transnational agenda floating through Brussels, Washington, or Davos. If Canada is serious about Arctic security, military readiness, and industrial capacity, the answer is not another elite photo-op wrapped in strategic jargon. The answer is a defence policy built for Canada, not for globalist networking events.
